The site for the house, a curving slope with a western exposure,
provided a fair challenge for a house with a large program, but
also opened the door for a design with dynamic sectional interest. A large stone wall cuts across the slope through the middle of the
house to organize the house’s circulation, and provides a strong
material texture to the interior spaces. Generous porches to the
west moderate a harsh solar exposure, and blur the line between
interior and exterior spaces. The landscape design also extends
the presence of the house outward, to complete a balanced
composition between the wild natural landscape and the highly
articulated house. Materials for the house include horizontally
banded cream and grey Leuder limestone walls, Douglas Fir
windows, doors, and paneling, blue Leuder limeststone and Ipe
wood floors, integral-color stucco, paint-grip standing seam roof,
and exposed steel. |
